ReferenceMaterial availability in Vietnam, and what it does to your date
On most orders the metal decides the delivery date, not the machining. This is the split we see when shops quote work here: what sits on the shelf, what arrives with notice and what has to be imported.
This is a working judgement from the requests we route, not a market survey, and it moves. If your experience differs, write to sales at vncnc.com and the page gets corrected.
Stocked locally
No material lead time worth planning around. If your part uses these, the schedule is a machining schedule.
Aluminium 6061 and 6063, stainless 304 and 316, mild and medium carbon steels such as S45C and S50C, brass, copper, POM, nylon, HDPE, acrylic and polycarbonate in common plate and bar sizes
Available with notice
Usually a domestic order rather than an import. Ask for the material lead time as a separate line in the quote.
Aluminium 7075, stainless 303, 416 and 17-4 PH, tool steels SKD11 and SKD61, titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5, PTFE, glass filled engineering plastics, less common plate thicknesses
Imported to order
This is where schedules break. Decide early whether you need traceability, because it changes both the supplier list and the delivery date.
PEEK and other high performance polymers, Inconel and nickel alloys, specialty aluminium and stainless grades, and anything that needs a certificate traceable to a named heat
Two lines that protect your schedule
Put both in the request and most material surprises disappear.
Local equivalent grade acceptable: yes / no Please quote the material lead time separately from the machining lead time.
Where buyers lose weeks
- Certified heatsTraceability is an import decision, not a paperwork decision. It moves the date more than any machining choice.
- Unusual plate thicknessA part designed for 47 mm stock waits for 47 mm stock. Designing to a standard thickness is free.
- Brand specific plasticsInsisting on one manufacturer of an engineering plastic can add a month for no functional gain.
- Late discoveryMaterial is checked when a shop prices the job. Asking about availability in the first message moves the discovery forward by a week.
About material and lead time
Which materials are easiest to machine in Vietnam?
Aluminium 6061 and 6063, stainless 304 and 316, common carbon steels such as S45C, plus brass, POM and nylon are held in local stock and can usually be cutting within days. On those grades the schedule is a machining schedule with no material wait inside it.
Can I get a mill certificate with parts made in Vietnam?
Yes, and it changes the supply route. Traceability to a named heat normally means the material is ordered rather than taken from stock, which adds weeks and shortens the list of shops comfortable handling it. Decide before you request quotes, not after.
What if my material is not available locally?
Three options in order of cost: accept an equivalent local grade if the properties allow it, let the shop import and plan for three to six weeks, or supply the material yourself. Say which is acceptable in the request so shops quote the same thing.
